The people’s hairstyle in the Edo period was determined by their status, age, and occupation to a certain degree. Wigs in Kabuki are used according to the character’s status and personality by referring to the people's hairstyle at that time. For instance, the samurai wife wears “Katahazushi” and princess wears “Fukiwa”. There are also such wigs exaggerated to suit the style unique to Kabuki as Kurumabin and Ende among others.
It is said that there are about 1000 types of wigs for Tachiyaku roles and about 400 types for Onnagata roles.
