It is a common hairstyle worn by Buke Nyobo (samurai wives) and Goten Jochu (waiting women at a samurai residence), and the hair is bound by a single hairpin called Kougai. In Kabuki as well, a wig of Katahazushi is widely used as a typical hairstyle for women in a samurai family.
