It refers to a villain character among other Kabuki roles. The villains can be classified by settings. The chief examples include “Jitsuaku”, an especially bad villain, “Kugeaku”, a wicked court nobleman, and “Iroaku”, a handsome villain.
Uke in “Shibaraku” is a typical “Kugeaku” role and wears Kumadori makeup called “Kugeare” drawn in a peculiar color of indigo. Among “Jitsuaku” characters, there is so big a villain called “Kunikuzushi” as to take over the whole country. This character wears a wig “Oji” of the hair reaching to the shoulder, showing his wickedness. The villain roles show their vicious nature by the help of the costume, Kumadori, and their acting.
