Gakuya

【楽屋】

【GAKUYA】

  • Inside of Gakuya.
  • Corridor in the Gakuya area.
In Gakuya are stationed not only actors but scene shifters, stage crews, and wig-makers, among others. When the actors are in a theatre, they live their life there by preparing for a performance or taking a rest. At the National Theatre, the rooms are located right behind the stage and equipped with Tatami floors.
The Gakuya at a playhouse in the Edo period was determined by actors’ roles and social status.
At today’s TV stations, the waiting rooms for casts are called Gakuya.
