The original is a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) premiered at Satsumaza Theatre in Edo in 1782 and was turned into a Kabuki play the following year, which is a representative O-ie sodo mono. The leading characters include Tsurugisawa Danjo and Iwafuji trying to take over the master’s house, and Onoe and Ohatsu trying to protect the family from being taken over. Many Onnagata characters appear in this play. A scene called “Zoriuchi” in which Iwafuji acted as “Kayaku (an actor performing another role besides his main character)” beats Onoe with a zori sandal, is widely known as a climax of the play.
