This is a Sewamono play written by Tsuruya Nanboku 4th and was premiered at Moritaza Theatre in 1813.
The story is about Osome, a daughter of an oil-seller, and Hisamatsu, a young apprentice, who love each other. An Onnagata actor Iwai Hanshiro 5th performed Osome in the premiere, and then he managed to perform on his own the seven characters in the play including Osome’s lover Hisamatsu by quickly changing costumes, which earned him a high reputation. The play is commonly called “Osome no Nanayaku (seven roles of Osome)”.
