【OSHIMODOSHI】

  • A scene of Oshimodoshi in “Sumidagawa Gonichi no Omokage”. Bando Mitsugoro 9th as Odate Samagoro. December, 1989 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100157000211)
Though it is considered one of the Kabuki-Juhachiban plays, “Oshimodoshi” is a name for a role or stage effects, not a play itself. With Kumadori makeup on his face for the Aragoto style as illustrated in a Nishikie painting, a character appears from the Agemaku curtain wearing a straw coat and holding a bamboo hat and thick young bamboo in his hands to repose a vengeful ghost or phantom on the Hanamichi. After facing with them and glaring at each other on the Hanamichi, he manages to force back the ghost and phantom towards the main stage and suppress their anger. The name of the role “Oshimodoshi” was taken from a course of performances described above. Forcing back a ghost and phantom expresses the strength and forcefulness of the Aragoto characters.
Among the repertoire performed today, the role appears at the last part of Shosagoto in “Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji”.
