Oboshi Rikiya

【大星力弥】

【OBOSHIRIKIYA】

  • Oboshi Rikiya with a youthful hairdo in “Kanadehon Chushingura”. Sawamura Tanosuke 6th as Oboshi Rikiya. December, 1974 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100069000115)
This “Wakashu” character, historically Oishi Chikara, appears as a boy before the coming-of-age ceremony in the play “Kanadehon Chushingura”.
A boy role like Rikiya, especially handsome one, is called “Wakashu-gata” and wears a wig with a forelock. This hairstyle shows the custom prior to the Edo period when men still left their forelock unshaved before the coming-of-age ceremony. The costumes express youthfulness and flashiness by using showy colors like purple or pale blue-green. Some characters like the role of Rikiya wear a Hakama along with Furisode (a long-sleeved kimono) which is originally a costume for women.
