  • Stage set chart (devices: Kugimachi Kumaji) for “Yoshinogawa no ba” from “Imoseyama Onna Teikin”. Owned by the National Theatre. (014-003)
Among a variety of decorations installed on stage, it refers to large-scale sets such as the background of mountains, rivers, sea, field, buildings, trees, and rocks. ”Mawari butai (rotating stage)” and “Seri (stage elevator) are also part of the stage sets.
Those who create these sets are called “Odogu-kata (scene shifters)”. They also install and remove the sets from stage. Producing a sound effect “Tsuke” on stage is now one of the scene shifters’ jobs.
In some Kabuki repertoire, there are highlights of how the stage sets are taken away or how the scene is changes; this is where they show their skill. The picture is a stage set chart on which the process of creating stage sets is based.
