Ebizori by an Onnagata actor in “Tsumoru Koi Yuki no Sekinoto”. Bando Tamasaburo 5th as Komachi-zakura fairy and Ichikawa Danjuro 12th as Otomo no Kuronushi. January, 1991 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100164000276)
It is an acting movement of holding one or both hands up and arching his body backward like a shrimp. The movement stylistically shows that the actor is overwhelmed by someone’s power, and can be seen in fighting or murder scenes, as well as in dancing. Ebizori movement by Onnagata is particularly beautiful, as witnessed in such plays as “Tsumoru Koi Yuki no Seki no To” and “Sagi Musume”.
