【UCHIKAKE】

  • The Uchikake coat of Akahime (“Costumes in Kabuki” courtesy of Fujingaho Co., Ltd.)
In Kabuki, Uchikake is a coat-like costume over a kimono worn by such characters as Buke Nyobo (wife in a samurai family), princess, or courtesans, and the bottom of the costume is characteristically long. The combination of a coat and kimono is determined by roles. A typical princess character wears a red uchikake coat over a red kimono, which made the role called “Akahime (red princess)”. In general, Buke Nyobo wears a coat of different color than a kimono she is wearing.
The uchikake coats worn by Agemaki in “Sukeroku” and Akoya in “Dannoura Kabuto Gunki” are decorated with particularly gorgeous embroidered patterns.
