Ichikawa Danjuro 1st (1660~1704)
He was the most distinguished actor in Edo during the Genroku period and left his mark on history as an originator of the Aragoto style. He first appeared on stage as Sakata no Kintoki in “Shitenno Osanadachi” in 1673, and his kumadori makeup and red painting all over the body for this character have been considered the beginning of the Aragoto style.
He was also active as a playwright under the name of “Mimasuya Hyogo” and produced many works to perform himself.
