The family has been widely acknowledged since Ichikawa Danshiro 2nd who was a pupil of Ichikawa Danjuro 9th active during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Danshiro 2nd mainly focused on the roles in the Japanese dance and Gidayu Kyogen drama. He was also good at Keren, and his son Ichikawa Ennosuke 2nd was renowned for incorporating the Ballet acting into the Japanese dance, as well as introducing new repertoire. Ennosuke 3rd, a grandson of Ennosuke 2nd, brought a new wind into the world of Kabuki by introducing the super Kabuki.
