  • Colorful costumes for princess role used in “Honcho Nijushiko” performed in March, 2005 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100244014007・Y_E0100244014008)
The costumes in Kabuki performance describe the characters’ roles. In Sewamono play, the costumes basically resemble to what people were wearing in the Edo period. On the other hand, the costumes in Jidaimono are meant to emphasize the characters’ personality. The costumes are devised to represent the roles in an audience-friendly manner by showing the strength of the Aragoto style and the ladylike attitude of the princess characters. Therefore, the costumes on stage are quite different from what people were really wearing during the Edo period. Someone wearing such exaggerated clothes as the leading character from “Shibaraku”, the Kabuki-Juhachiban, would not have seen walking down on the street.
