It refers to a rough and wild Kabuki acting style created by Ichikawa Danjuro 1st in Edo during the Genroku period. The dynamism and breadth of the Aragoto style was favored by the people in Edo where the characteristics of Bushi were dominant. After the Genroku period, the Aragoto style developed mainly in Edo. The chief examples are some Kabuki-Juhachiban plays, including “Narukami”, and “Kurumabiki” scene from “Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami”, as well as a role called Watonai from “Kokusenya Kassen”.
The features of a leading character in the Aragoto style include a makeup called Kumadori and exaggerated costumes, as well as such unique acting movements as Mie and Roppo. The Tachiyaku roles performed in the Aragoto style are categorized as “Aragoto”.
