There are two types of agemaku: Toya-agemaku hung at the entrance of Toya, a small room at the end of the Hanamichi, and Kamite-agemaku located at the right side of the stage, which is used during the entrance and exit of the actors and props like a ship.
In many cases, the theatre’s symbol is dyed in white on a black or deep blue cloth. Also, Agemaku is hung using Kanawa, metal rings, which make a unique “clink” sound when the curtain is handled with speed. And the audience looks to the curtain for the “clink” sound as an actor makes an appearance on stage.
