Agemaki is a chief example of Keisei (courtesan) roles and considered a demanding role among Onnagata characters. The role appears as Sukeroku’s lover in “Sukeroku Yukari no Edozakura”, one of the Kabuki-Juhachiban plays.
A wig of Datehyogo thickly decorated with Japanese hairpins and combs, and a Uchikake coat with gorgeous embroidered patterns are a typical costume for a courtesan role, as characteristically shown on the Nishikie paintings above.
Other unique costumes of a courtesan role include Manaita-obi, a band to be hung at the front of the body, and Takageta with three supporting pieces below the base, both used in full dress.
