Expression in Kabuki
Ningyoburi (dancing in imitation of puppet)
Ningyoburi means acting that imitates the movements of puppets in Gidayu-kyogen repertoire transferred from Ningyo-joruri (puppet plays) [a.k.a. Bunraku]. There are many examples of Ningyoburi in scenes played by Onnagata, particularly when a young woman's emotion has reached to its limit.

The image shows Ningyoburi by Yaegakihime in the scene commonly called 'Kitsunebi' in "Honcho nijushiko." The movement of Yaegakihime who whole-heartedly wishes to help her lover, are expressed by Ningyoburi. An actor in the role of Ningyotsukai (puppeteer) always stays behind the actor doing Ningyoburi, and acts as if he is operating a puppet while holding the actor's body, to achieve "ningyo rashisa" (looks like a puppet). Also, while Ningyoburi is being performed, the actor does not speak his own lines. The play is advanced by the Takemoto reciting.
Ningyoburi Yaegakihime played by Nakamura Ganjiro 3rd (Sakata Tojuro), Ningyotsukai (puppeteer) by Nakamura Kanjaku 5th, "Honcho nijushiko" 'Nagao kenshin yakata okuniwa kitsunebi' scene, November 1999
