![]() Soft carriage of the body and a delicate way of speaking show the good breeding of this young man even though he is wearing a shabby kimono. Wagoto is very different from Aragoto. The role of Izaemon can be traced back to "Yugiri nagori no shogatsu," in which it was performed for the first time by Sakata Tojuro 1st. Since then the role of Fujiya Izaemon has been passed down as a typical Wagoto role.
The Wagoto character is the type of handsome man called Nimaime. For Wagoto roles actors use beautiful pure white Shironuri makeup.
The costume used for Izaemon is called Kamiko. This costume is used for the type of character called Yatsushi (emaciated person) who was originally of high social status, but who has been reduced to poverty for some reason. Originally kamiko is a shabby kimono made by pasting scraps of washi (Japanese paper) together, but Kamiko as a stage costume is usually expressed as a kimono made of black and purple fabric with parts of love letters embroidered on it with gold and silver thread so it will show up better on stage.
