Invitation to Kabuki - Guidance for Kabuki appreciation
The Kabuki stage
Agemaku
The Agemaku is the curtain hung at the end of the Hanamichi (passageway to/from stage) and is visible from the stage. Usually, the crest of the theater is dyed on the curtain. This photograph shows the Agemaku of the National theatre of Japan.
Metal rings are attached to the top of the Agemaku, and a steel bar is put through these rings to suspend it. When the Agemaku is opened or closed, it makes a unique "charin" sound. This sound and the speed of opening/closing the Agemaku vary according to the scene and the character entering or exiting on the Hanamichi.
The curtain on the Kamite side under the Yuka where Takemoto is recited, is called Kamite-agemaku, and the 5-color curtain hung on the Shimote side in the "Matsubame" stage set used for Kabuki developed from Noh plays and Kyogen farces, is also called Agemaku.
